MKH 8000 Series

This is a clever little kit that really makes the most of the lovely MKH8000 range from Sennheiser.

The MKH8050 is a Super Cardioid microphone that gives superb off-axis rejection and crystal clear sound. We have bundled it with a Rycote Mono Extended Ball Gag and Windjammer and a very special Connbox.

And this is where the clever bit comes in, the analogue XLR module for the MKH 8000 range is just an XLR with a thread adapter, all the electronics are within the capsule. So, the clever folks at Rycote have made a Connbox for the MKH 8000 range in partnership with Sennheiser reducing the weight of the microphone, thus making the suspension that much more effective!

This package bundles the microphone in the Extended Ball Gag allowing room for the MZF 8000 filter/attenuator which is supllied.

A Windjammer is included for working out doors.

So what you have is a kit that gives the Schoeps a run for its money. It sounds crisp and clear, is exceptionally low noise, is light weight and is perfect for those really long days working with a pole indoors or out.

The omni-directional MKH 8020 is ideal for recording large and small sound sources, for a "Decca Tree" or for use in an OSS "Jecklin Disk" array. As it does not suffer from a proximity effect, it is also a good choice for close-miking. If the acoustic ambience is right, this microphone will provide very impressive recordings. The extra octave at the bottom end makes the MKH 8020 perfect for recording pipe organs, grand piano and acoustic double-bass.

The cardioid MKH 8040 is suitable for almost any application. It considerably reduces pick-up of a reverberant room. This is very helpful in rooms with poor acoustics or when disturbing sounds impinge mainly from the rear.

The super-cardioid MKH 8050 will give higher attenuation of off-axis sound from the side than its cardioid sister model. It is a good choice for recording soloists, where the requirements for lateral acoustic separation are higher.

This is the brand new gun mic from Sennheiser. What we love about this new offering is the fact that it can be easily adapted for AES42 by swapping the powering module. The mic ships with a tiny XLR3 analogue mic level module, to interface directly to say the Sound Devices 788 or DEva AES42 you will need the MZD 8000. The addition of the MZF 8000 inline module gives switchable LF and attenuation. (For details of both these modules see below.)

MZF 8000 is a new filter module for the MKH 8000 professional RF condenser microphone series. Especially in the broadcast and film industries, it effectively blocks interference caused by infrasound, such as low-frequency noises caused by wind and handling.

The fantastic sound of the MKH 8000 series can now be converted to digital directly at the microphone head, ensuring a natural sound without any loss of quality.
The compact digital module is simply screwed onto the microphone head in place of the XLR module, turning the audio signal of the MKH 8020 (omni-directional), MKH 8040 (cardioid), MKH 8050 (super-cardioid) , MKH 8060 (gun) and MKH 8070 (rifle) into a digital one. The new digital module ensures that the warm, natural, yet fantastically clear and powerful sound of the MKH 8000 series is maintained in full quality along the entire signal chain. In contrast to conventional digitization, which uses a separate analogue/digital converter at some stage in the chain, the Sennheiser MZD 8000 digital module eliminates cable losses and, most importantly, features a converter and surrounding circuitry that have been optimally matched to the microphone.
Like all signal-carrying components in the 8000 series, the module is designed with two channels and converts the microphone signal according to the AES 42 standard. The microphones can be synchronized by any digital system. In addition to the A/D converter (24-bit, sampling rate up to 192 kHz), the digital module contains a highly integrated DSP unit. With the aid of dedicated PC control software and an AES 42 interface, the microphone allows settings such as the low-cut filter and attenuation to be remote-controlled. The required phantom power for microphones is provided by the AES 42 input of the Sound Devices or DEva recorder.
