The Sound Devices Astral TX is a digital wireless bodypack transmitter designed for professional production sound workflows. It combines SpectraBand wideband tuning from 169 MHz to 1525 MHz, GainForward gain control, NexLink remote operation and built-in 32-bit float recording in a compact transmitter format.

Its multipurpose Lemo input supports a wide range of sources, including 2-wire and 3-wire lavalier microphones, balanced mic, 12V or 48V phantom-powered microphones, balanced line-level, AES3, AES42 and guitar with the optional Smart Guitar Cable. The Astral TX can be remotely controlled from compatible Astral receivers, including the Astral ARX16 and ARX8, or via the Astral Remote app.

Timecode

The Astral TX includes built-in timecode and can be jammed via USB-C or wirelessly over NexLink from compatible Astral receivers, including the Astral ARX32, ARX16 and ARX8. It can also receive timecode from an 8-Series mixer-recorder using a USB-A to USB-C connection, or via optional XL-TC-USBC-LEMO and XL-TC-USBC-BNC cables.

The internal timecode clock has 0.2 ppm accuracy and holds accurate timecode for up to 4 hours when powered down with batteries inserted, or up to 1 hour without batteries using the internal supercapacitor.

Supported frame rates include 23.98, 24, 25, 29.97 DF, 29.97 ND, 30 DF and 30 ND, with frame rates auto-detected from the incoming source. LTC input supports 0.3V – 3V p-p, and LTC output is available via the optional XL-TC-USBC-LEMO cable.

Advanced Features

The Astral TX includes advanced features such as NexLink, SpectraBand and long-range digital modulation. NexLink allows multiple Astral TX transmitters to be remotely controlled, monitored and timecode synced from compatible Astral receivers, including the Astral ARX16 and Astral ARX8. The transmitter also features SpectraBand tuning from 169–1525 MHz, giving users wide frequency flexibility across supported regions.

Professional mic preamp

True Balanced Input

The Astral TX features a true balanced, low-noise, high-headroom mic preamp based on the preamp design used in Sound Devices 8-Series mixer-recorders. It supports balanced microphone and line-level sources through the multipurpose Lemo input.

Excellent Battery Life

The Astral TX offers up to 12 hours of battery runtime, depending on battery type, RF power, input source and operating mode. It can run from standard AA batteries, rechargeable Li-ion batteries or USB power packs, with built-in Li-ion charging via USB-C.

User-programmable control

Astral TX Switch

The optional Astral TX Switch provides a removable, user-programmable physical control for functions such as mute, record, RF, power or aux routing. Remote gain control

GainForward

GainForward removes the need to set gain directly on the transmitter. Audio level can be controlled from a compatible Astral receiver or mixer-recorder, allowing adjustments to be made without accessing the transmitter on talent.

Clear status display

e-Paper Display

The Astral TX uses a sunlight-readable e-Paper display for viewing key settings and status information. The display remains visible even when powered off, and the backlight activates when the battery door is opened for use in darker environments.
